Six DIY Tech Fixes to make life easier - Mona chopra

IT support professionals have plenty of stories like mine, whether they work formally or informally. Performing updates and rebooting can solve many of the problems people encounter with their computers and web-based tools. Here are a few simple fixes for your classroom tech problems. The following list isn't comprehensive. This article is simply meant to address common problems and their solutions.

1. Run updates. Your computer may need updates, so run them if they are available. Having to restart your computer may be inconvenient, but it's not as inconvenient as having a computer that doesn't work properly. A computer and software that is not updated can also be more susceptible to security breaches

2. Turn it off, count to ten, turn it on. Restarting your computer can fix glitches, even if it is up-to-date. When dealing with printers and projectors, this is especially true.

3. Cookies! Is your browser set to accept cookies? To provide you with the best possible experience and/or full functionality, many websites (web-based apps) require cookies. If you want to remove information stored on a particular website in your browser, you may need to clear cookies.

4. Close a few tabs and background apps.You might have too many unnecessary things running in the background if your computer is running slowly. Press CTRL+ALT+Delete on your Windows computer to open the task manager if you're not sure what's running in the background. To see what's running in the background on a Mac, open the Activity Monitor.

5. Enable pop-ups. Web apps often use pop-up windows for account logins and for additional functionality like audio recording.You will not be able to log-in or see those additional features if the pop-up is blocked.

6. Check out, are you on the right network? At times Students and staff use different networks in many schools. Staff may have different permissions on those networks than students. Apps and tools used during teaching should be on the same network as students. Example- Screencasting from your computer to your students' computers usually requires you to be on the same network to broadcast your screen on a wireless projector
